U-T San Diegoâs music and art critic, James Chute, is a journalist who has covered the arts for more than three decades. A Pittsburgh native and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, he served as music critic for The Cincinnati Post, The Milwaukee Journal and The Orange County Register before joining The San Diego Union in 1990. At the U-T, he held positions as Assistant Arts Editor, Currents Editor, Arts Editor and Special Sections Editor, in addition to writing about the arts. He returned to writing full-time in 2010. A Pulitzer Prize finalist in criticism (for his coverage of the Milwaukee and Chicago symphonies) and a winner of an ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award and Penney Missouri Award, he has contributed articles to the New Grove Dictionary of Music, among other publications.
